What types of cut flowers are there?

Flower Types: Focal Flowers, Fillers and More

When creating bouquets and floral arrangements, the possibilities are endless. There are hundreds of flower varieties available, but they can all be grouped into four main categories: focal flowers, filler flowers, greenery, and line flowers. Understanding how these categories work together allows you to effortlessly create a harmonious and professional-looking arrangement.

Each flower group serves a specific purpose: focal flowers draw attention, line flowers add height and structure, filler flowers fill in empty spaces, and greenery supports and enhances the overall design. Below, you'll find more information about each flower type and how to combine them effectively.

1. Focal Flowers

These are the eye-catchers of your bouquet. Due to their size or striking shape, they immediately stand out. They often feature a single large bloom per stem. For a balanced effect, you typically choose one to four types of focal flowers per bouquet.

Examples of focal flowers:

  • Alstroemeria Fashionista®
  • Dianthus Sparkz® & Breanthus®
  • Standard Carnation
  • Gerberas

2. Filler Flowers

Filler flowers add volume and help complete your arrangement. They often consist of small clustered blooms and contribute texture and colour variation. They’re ideal for filling empty spaces and making your bouquet appear fuller.

Our favourite filler flowers:

  • Gypsophila Zinzi® (Baby’s Breath)
  • Limonium Diamond
  • Limonium Perennial

3. Greenery

Greenery is indispensable in floral design, whether it’s foliage or green-coloured flowers. It adds structure, contrast, and a natural appearance to your arrangement. Moreover, it provides support to the other flowers in your bouquet.

  • Dianthus Sparkz® Green
  • Alstroemeria Specialty Green Crown
  • Alstroemeria Florinca Jade
  • Gerbera Marimo Green

4. Line Flowers
