Say Goodbye to Aphids: Tips for Healthy Plants

Aphids: tiny insects, big nuisance. These sap-sucking pests can weaken your plants, cause distorted leaves, leave behind sticky residue (honeydew), and even lead to mould growth. Luckily, there are plenty of natural and effective ways to control aphids. Here are our top tips:

1. Inspect regularly

Prevention is better than cure. Check your plants often, especially the young shoots and the underside of leaves. The earlier you spot aphids, the easier they are to remove.

2. Rinse with water

A simple but effective method: rinse the aphids off your plant with a strong jet of water. Do this preferably in the morning so the plant has time to dry.

3. Use natural predators

Ladybirds, lacewings and parasitic wasps love aphids. You can even buy these beneficial insects and release them in your garden or on your balcony.

4. Make a homemade remedy

Mix a few drops of washing-up liquid with water and spray the affected parts of the plant. Always test on a small area first to avoid damage.

5. Plant natural repellents

Some plants, like lavender, mint and garlic, naturally repel aphids. Place them near vulnerable plants for added protection.

6. Prune heavily infested areas

If part of the plant is badly affected, prune those sections to prevent further spread.
